Dear Mike,

My first day working for The Texas Tribune was last month, when I started as the Rio Grande Valley reporter. I am the Tribune’s first journalist based here, and I got started quickly to publish my first Tribune article from McAllen about the La Joya Independent School District’s consideration of a policy to restrict employees from holding elected office following a fraud investigation. A lot of “firsts” for me and the Tribune! I hope you will mark a “first” of your own today and make your first donation in support of independent Texas journalism.

Paying for articles you can get for free might seem unnecessary, but when you pitch in $10 or $15, it helps me and my new colleagues, who are all journalists investigating tips, gathering data and establishing the facts about issues all over our state. But more than that, when you donate to the Tribune, you are showing that you believe independent Texas journalism is important and something that you value.
Make my first donation
Since I started, I’ve learned there are more than 2 million people who read TexasTribune.org each month, and 99% of them don’t contribute. The ones who do make donations and become Texas Tribune members can feel pride that they are supporting an important public service for Texas. When you donate, you join a community of Texas Tribune members who are investing in the future of our state.

What do you say, can you pitch in $15?

I’m working on some big stories here, and your contribution can help me tackle more reporting projects this year. I am proud to be your first Rio Grande Valley reporter!

In gratitude,
